Record-Breaking Performances for Venture Capital in 2019
This past year in venture capital has been monumental in Britain. The increasing desire to invest in UK startups is evident in recent data. The figures show funds raised in the sector reached an impressive £3.9billion in 2019 compared to £2.6billion in 2018–a major jump of 50%. Compared to the US and European counterparts where venture capital fundraising staggered, the UK witnessed very healthy results. In the US, venture capital funds raised decreased by as much as 23% since 2018, and funds raised in Europe fell short as well, decreasing by nearly 15%.
If the EU referendum had any effect on venture capital investments in the UK, then that effect could only have contributed to a fantastic performance. Since the 2016 vote, investments into the UK’s technology firms have more than doubled reaching £9billion in the time span. This shatters the doubts and concerns that the vote could spell damage to the sector. In fact, since the Brexit vote in 2016, the UK tech sector has outperformed France and Germany combined in investments secured.
These findings admit to good news in the coming year for EIS and SEIS. Provided that this trend continues, the EIS and SEIS market will only benefit as two of the main schemes facilitating Venture Capital investments across the UK.
